Shannon is originally from Long Neck, Delaware. After high school she joined the United States Coast Guard. In 2001, she and her husband moved to Phoenix, AZ where she graduated from Long Technical College with a veterinary assistant certificate. In 2003 they moved to Gettysburg, PA where she joined the United States Coast Guard Reserve and attended Towson University for animal behavior. She has spent the last 16 years in emergency medicine and has a strong commitment to serving her community. She continues to strive to make CCAE a place where the community trusts their pets' emergency/urgent care needs will be looked after. She retired from the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Coast Guard Reserve in 2023, after 23yrs of service. She has two beautiful children, a dog named Starburst and two Leopard Geckos. She loves spending time with her family, traveling, hiking, and trying new foods.
Dr. Vanous has been a veterinarian in Carroll County for 18 years. She grew up in Ellicott City and then went to the University of Maryland, College Park for undergrad. She attended vet school at Virginia Tech at the joint Maryland and Virginia veterinary school (VMRCVM) and graduated in 2005. She lives in Westminster with her partner, Joe, and his three kids, Gaige, Payton and Leah. They have Jek Porkins, their silly 3 year old pit bull and are on the look out for the next dog or cat that needs a home, as the right animal will find us. She loves travelling with friends and family, riding in their Jeep Wrangler along with hiking and kayaking. Joe has gotten her interested in disc golfing so they regularly visit Codorus Park for lots of outdoor fun. In 2022, She partnered with her fellow veterinarian, Maurene Sutton and CCAE's Practice Manager, Shannon Panzer, to buy CCAE. Since then, Dr. Sutton and Dr. Vanous have been the two full time veterinarians here.
She hopes to grow CCAE's strong assistant, technician and client service team along with adding veterinarians so we can help and heal even more pets.
Dr. Sutton is a current owner of CCAE. She, along with Shannon and Dr. Vanous, purchased the hospital in May 2022. Prior to that, she worked in general practice for 15 years. She went to Virginia Tech and received her BS in Animal and Poultry Sciences in 2003 and received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the Virginia -Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. She moved to Carroll County after graduation and was predominantly working on dairy cattle and transitioned into small animal general practice after 5 years. She has always enjoyed urgent care/emergency medicine and is so happy that she now has the opportunity to work at CCAE and provide emergency services for the community and local general practices. She hopes to grow the practice and be able to offer overnight/continued care for our clients.
When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her family. She is married to Jeff and has 3 children - Jillian, Lucy and Waverly. They love to hike, explore the woods and local creeks as well as play with their French Bulldog named Ralphie. She enjoys country music, cycling, reading and wine tasting.
Dr. Rebecca Schulze is our newest DVM addition to the CCAE team! Dr. Schulze was raised here in Carroll County and is excited to return to this area to support the community that helped raised her.
Dr. Schulze graduated from University of Maryland in 2019 with a degree in Animal Science with a special interest in Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture. She then traveled to Florida where she received her Degree of Veterinarian Medicine at the University of Florida in 2024. She is Fear-Free and FEMA (to aid with nature disasters) certified and has a certificate in Shelter Medicine.
When she not at work, she likes to read books, watch reality TV and spend times outdoors with her friends and family.
Dr. Schulze owns two dogs (pictured here). Kepler is a Labrador Retriever mix (on the right) and Gerry is a Staffordshire Terrier mix (on the left). She adopted them both from the Humane Society of North Central Florida, where she spent some time working during veterinary school.
Sarah is the Medical Team Manager here at CCAE. She has been a part of the CCAE team since the spring 2010. When She first started on our team, she worked in a split role as a CSS as well as a Beginning Assistant. Through the years, she has worked her way through each department, learning all aspects of our clinic from the frontlines, to the back surgery/treatment lines, and into management. Although her heart lives with our patients, she can fairly say, she is proud of our team's accomplishments as well. The hard work they do to save our furry friends will forever amaze her! She hopes to continue to lead our medical team alongside her colleagues and owners and continue to watch our practice grow.
When not working, she enjoys spending time with her family on their hobby farm. Their three daughters are very active in Frederick County 4H, so they also enjoy learning not only things about the ‘average cat and dog’ but interesting things about livestock and exotic animals as well. Their farm ranges from cows to chickens, turkeys to rabbits, cats to dogs, fish to lizards, and everything in between. Her soul animal by far is her Rottweiler named Picklini (the very best farm dog ever!!). Their family also enjoys swimming, walking, surfing and art.
